March 2nd 2009, World Famous Julio

The photo above was taken by none other than the world famous Julio. Julio has an accomplished resume, an extensive list of gallery shows, has traveled the world making masterpieces, and has done it all within his six years of being on God’s green earth.

Ok, that’s not really true, but maybe he will be world famous now that he has been published on the “world wide web.” I mean, he did create a great photograph of Beto photographing the mural which Team Liberti painted back in January. For his project, Julio had to find things which had the colors red, green, blue, or yellow in them. As you can see, he got an A+ for finding a subject which contained all four colors.

Photos of the day 1/23/2009 - A Peruvian market, American cuisine

A dog scrounges for bits of fallen food in the main market place of Arequipa, Avelino. Typically, people start shopping at 5 am in order to haggle for the best food at the best prices.  Those arriving later at the market will have to contend with the flies and rodents for meat and produce baking in the heat of the day.

Nathan and Lindsay, two outgoing gringos, demonstrate for an entertained Peruvian audience how to swing dance and make a complete fool of yourself in the local market place, Avelino. Team Liberti had their first taste of food shopping and experienced what Peruvian tutors at New Hope do every Friday morning. Team Liberti split into groups and cooked traditional American fare with the kids at New Hope.

One group from Team Liberti, Bethany, Haley, Bruce and Sarah, haggle over the price of potatoes. Their group cooked fried chicken, mashed potatoes and an apple pie with the little boys, giving them the opportunity to experience a tasty, American dish.

Rosmary, tutor to the little boys, presents an apple pie ready for baking.

Tired from their market experience, Nathan and Lindsay prepare sweet potato fries and guacamole, while a Curious Jorge examines tortillas for the chicken tacos.

Liberti group Lydia, Neal, Sandy, and Sarah pose with the little girls and a Peruvian family that works at the home. Together, they made meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, with an apple pie for dessert.

Photo of the day 1/15/2009 - No wisdom yet

Meet Fredy, again. I believe Fredy ends up in a lot of my photos partly because he is always around and really outgoing. But Fredy is of that age where the remainder of your baby teeth are on their way out, and your adult teeth are on their way in. Wouldn’t it be great if when you had all your adult teeth you were actually an adult!? I don’t think so. I think I might still have a baby tooth lingering in mi boca if you know what I mean. Anyway. Fredy’s tooth was pretty loose and he had been playing with it all night. He wiggled it and wiggled it without success. It got it to the point where you should probably just tie a string from the tooth to the door knob and shut the door. I even demonstrated the process to him with the door jokingly to him and he laughed back and shook his head with a big smile. In the end, his tooth remained in his mouth, and he had to wait another night for the tooth fairy.

Photo of the day 1/09/2009 - Make due

Growing up, I usually had one pair of sneakers, and that was it. I didn’t really have dress shoes, because I didn’t get dressed up. I was a kid, and playing was my job. It took months before I would come close to wearing out my shoes, and then my parents would take me out to get a new pair. Even now, before I came here to Peru, my sneakers were getting pretty close to wearing out from months of abuse, so I decided to purchase some new ones. Growing up, and even now, it never crossed my mind that people would ever wear two different shoes. But some situations don’t allow you to choose. The boy in this photograph, from the all boys home Axshel and I visited, has only this “un-pair” of shoes. I’m not sure why he is wearing two different shoes, but it definitely catches my attention, makes me think twice about how blessed I’ve been growing up with two parents, let alone shoes that match.

Photo of the day 01/04/2009 - Axshel’s photo

This photograph was taken by Axshel. He was the person in yesterday’s photo of the day. This photograph was taken a few weeks ago when I first gave Axshel the camera to go out and shoot whatever he wanted. And this awesomely composed shot is what he brought back. In the photograph are two of three buildings here at New Hope. The brown brick is where all the girls live (including the gringas), and the office is also in this building. In the blue building, on the first floor is where are the friday night fun happens, where candy and beverages are sold, and where ping pong and fuse ball are played.  Above the fuente, on the second floor is the chapel where events are held. And the little white one on the left is only a shed. I love this photograph on so many levels, but I’m not going to critique it. Just let your mind do the talking.

December 31st 2008, Amazing Agusto

Agusto, a special needs child here at New Hope Children’s Home, has the ability to brighten up anyone’s day. Just like everyone, he has things which make Agusto, Agusto. One thing I have learned about Agusto is he loves his sandals to death (literally, his old ones were falling apart and worn through. Then they bought him new ones for Christmas, but he still prefers to wear his well loved sandals). I believe Agusto’s sandals could be his trademark. Agusto prefers to wear his sandals on the wrong feet, and he also loves them so much that he wears them to bed. Sleeping with them on can make things interesting, because when you have to wake Agusto up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and he has lost one of his sandals amongst the covers, he won’t use the bathroom until both sandals are safe on his feet. In addition to searching through mixed up blankets, we also have to sort silently in the dark since there are five other boys asleep in the room. Once we locate the sandals, we can continue on to the bathroom and then back to sleep. Agusto’s sandals are only one of many interesting Agusto things which make Agusto, Agusto.

December 30th 2008, Makiver’s Testimony

Makiver, photographed here, sharing his testimony on how he arrived at New Hope and how New Hope has helped turn his life around for the better. After Makiver’s mother and father passed away, he didn’t have anyone to look after him. Makiver now has the loving people here at New Hope to expand his family.  The sign behind him “Quiero Alabarte” says, “I want to give you praise,” meaning towards God.

Many of the kids here at New Hope have stories to tell. Their stories make you cringe with anger and wonder how anyone could treat a child in such a way that it makes it difficult to wrap your brain around. Each child’s situation is different, but in the end they are the same when they come to New Hope. When a Child arrives, they find a permanent home where they are loved, treated as an important individual in this large loving family, and shown how to forgive through the power of the Gospel.

If you feel led to help the children at New Hope and would like to sponsor any of the children, please click here.
